Hemianopia or hemianopsia is the loss of parts of the visual field due to brain damage in the visual cortex. Most cases, of hemianopia are homonymous hemianopia, where patients can only detect objects in either the left or right half of their visual field. Because the two hemispheres of the brain control opposite sides of the body, Right visual cortex brain damage results in left hemianopia, where patients can only see the right half of the visual field. Left visual cortex damage results in right hemianopia, where patients can see the left half of the visual field while the right half is undetected.
Current options for hemianopia patients mostly focus on adjusting eye and head movements to compensate for the lost visual field.
H-J Winston Inc. has developed an innovative new rehabilitation program to help patients with visual hemianopia recover their lost visual field. Our rehabilitation program uses a virtual reality headset to deliver each rehabilitation session. The virtual reality device presents the user with multi-sensory stimulation to induce the brain's intrinsic ability for neuroplasticity. Our device is portable and easy to set-up. Based on previous data, changes in the visual field can be expected around 2 weeks from the start of a daily rehabilitation regimen.
